Vice President Yemi Osibanjo on Monday arrived Delta State as part of his scheduled visits to the Niger Delta region.
On arrival, VP Osibanjo visited Gbaramatu Kingdom in company Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Minister for Petroleum (State), Dr Ibe Kachikwu and other top government functionaries where he had a closed door meeting with His Royal Majesty, Oboro Gbaraun II Aketekpe, Agbdagba the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, and a town hall meeting with the people of the Kingdom before inspecting the facilities at the Maritime University, Okerenkoko and also met with the Olu of Warri Kingdom, HRM Ogiame Ikenwoli .
Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant(Media and Publicity) to Vice President in a series of tweets said VP’s Delta visit on Monday, drew widespread excitement and warm welcome at every stop from Gbaramatu to Maritime University, Warri & PTI, Effurun.
Mr Akande added that as President Buhari’s emissary to the Niger Delta, VP Osinbajo’s message to the oil communities is that “we have to plan for the future”.
Professor Osibanjo told the chiefs and people of Delta state that he had not come to argue or to negotiate as the issues confronting the Niger Delta were already well known. He said rather, it is time to act.
While inspecting the temporary site of the Maritime University in Kurutie, a stone thrown from Oporoza, the VP told the people that President Buhari has given a nod to the project. He also called on a concerted effort from all stakeholders to tackle the development challenges in the region.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta who was on the entourage, said the visit would bring changes to the region.
“I urged you to give peace a chance to bring development to our region,” he pleaded with Niger Delta youths.
The President of Ijaw Youth Council, Mr Eradiri Udens, who spoke, assured that the Ijaw Youths would work with President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
“This visit is a confidence building visit, we will work with President Buhari,” he said.
