This Continued ASUU Strike: Taking Advantage of the Situation.
When preparation meets opportunity, success is inevitable.
The quote above is one of my favourite sayings of all time and it is true.It has been more than 3 months since the academic staff union of universities (ASUU) have been on strike to press home their demands for the federal government to implement a 2009 MoU both parties signed.Details of that agreement are at least to me sketchy as I have not yet gotten the opportunity to read the it and know if what ASUU is fighting for is truly for a better educational system for our universities as they claim or to enrich their pockets as claimed by the federal government(I am still hoping that someone will help me out with the true details) but any-which-way as a friend of mine would put it,a lot of our undergraduates may have seen over 3 months of their lives wasted at home, probably doing nothing and they are the real casualties of this ongoing strike action.

As a student why you hope as we all are hopeful that The Federal Government and ASUU reach an agreement and the strike gets called off, what do you do with the awesome resource you have at your disposal? By that,I mean what do you do with your time? As it’s obvious you have it in some good major of abundance at the moment.

Rather than sit at home doing nothing most of the time, and chatting away on social media,it would have been and still is( as we still do not know when this stalemate will be done with) to learn a new skill, develop your talent or bring an idea to life. After all most if not all the curriculum currently in use at our Universities are outdated and have no practical approach to helping you live your desired career dreams in real life.

There are a whole lot of on-line schools and courses that you can take advantage of from the comfort of your home or where ever it is you are spending time as the strike action persists and they cover a wide range of topics from web development to programming, networking to server administration, marketing skills to project management, music to biological and engineering researches etc. all you need is access to the internet, your time(you have it in full) and your commitment which is by far the most important.

Some of the places you can find awesome resources to keep you busy and learning something new and awesome are:

Coursera is an education company that partners with the top universities and organizations in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. They currently have about 461 courses from 91 partners- some of the best universities in the world and these courses cover topics in Science,Engineering,Marketing,Technology,Entreprenuership studies and a whole lot more.

EdX is a non-profit created by founding partners Harvard and MIT. This online school is helping bring higher education to students around the world. EdX offers interactive online classes in subjects including law, history, science, engineering, business, social sciences, computer science, public health, and artificial intelligence (AI).

iversity is an online school service made up of an interdisciplinary team from Berlin,Germany that has set out to garner the wealth of opportunities to improve the quality of teaching and learning for future generations of students.I have signed up the course “The Future of Story Telling” and really looking forward to it to help me tell stories better as I Blog.

I think there is no easier way to introduce you to Alison other its mission statement:

“Our mission at ALISON is simple: to enable you, wherever you are in the world, to learn and get certified new skills – at your own pace – using our free, interactive, multimedia.”

There are a lot more on-line services on the web that provide free and quality learning Most of the skills you will learn here and invaluable and something that will help you become better in your chosen career path. So as we pray for the strike to come to an end so our undergraduates go back to school, its a great opportunity to make use of this available free time to learn some really interesting educational concepts,it will help you become a better student and a better person a long time after school. So take advantage of the situation and start developing yourself now.
