For two days the city of Port Harcourt experienced some political reverberations as supporters of the Governor of Rivers State Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi embarked on a massive political pilgrimage to the Rivers State Government House.

The occasion was the visit of the leaders of the All Peoples Congress who had come to Port Harcourt to try to woo the governor of Rivers State and the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum NGF to their fold. The visit which was initially scheduled for Monday the 4th of November, 2013 was rescheduled till the following day due to logistic issues which confronted the intending visitors. However, as the political pilgrims waited for the august visitors, they refused to have a dull moment as they turned the Rivers State government house into a live concert venue as groups and local government areas took turns to sing and dance.

Enter Tuesday: As if the crowds which came out on Monday were not enough, the Tuesday crowds can only be described as mammoth. Like birds that have long been caged and suddenly regained freedom, the people savored the opportunity of expression which had long been denied them by the selective police ban on public gatherings.

As has been the case in Rivers State in the recent past, the Rivers State Police Command under the leadership of CP Mbu Joseph Mbu had deployed police officers to the gate of the Port Harcourt International Airport to prevent Rivers men and women who had come out to give the visitors a rousing welcome. However, like a people who have been pushed to the wall the people did not cringe this time. Led by Governor Amaechi who had just flown in from Lagos and who was originally going back to freshen up to receive his visitors the people and their governor trekked 4kilometers from the gate to the airport. As they matched on, supporters chanted and sang against the political intimidation, crackdown and impunity in the state.

After listening, carefully to all the speeches, the governor who got caught in a rhapsody of praise, worship and dance to the Almighty God at the government house, told the visitors and his teeming supporters that he would consult widely before making any decision whether to continue with the PDP or cross over to the APC.
