The coordinator of the Middle Belt Residents in the South-South, Dr Alli Adogwu has said his people are elated with the news that the caucus of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers state have adopted Tonye Cole as the consensus candidate of the party in the forthcoming governorship primaries of the party.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after a delegation of the Middle-Belt residents in the South-South met behind closed doors with the former deputy speaker of the Rivers state house of assembly and stalwart of the APC in Rivers state, Hon Leyii Kwanee, Dr Alli said the decision to present Cole has been seen by his people as a welcome development as many of them have now pledged to come out in their numbers to work for the victory of the party.
Dr Alli said Northerners and especially middle belters who live and do business in Rivers state have adopted her as their second home hence they are “interested in the man that will come and turn around the fortunes of the people of the state”.
He said: “we are going to throw our weight behind the decision. We are going to back it fully because we know that everybody is behind this decision”.
“Tonye Cole is not just an APC decision, he represents the yearnings and aspirations of Rivers people for good governance and meaning development”.
He said Tonye Cole is unique because he has a track record of success outside of politics. “Rivers state at this point does not need a core politician to govern her, we need businessmen, somebody who has succeeded somewhere”.
On the anxieties of other politicians who may have felt displaced by Cole’s emergence, he said since it is the party that is presenting him and the party would know what to do at the appropriate time. He said Cole’s success as a technocrat should combine with a deputy who is a core politician as well as other leaders to give the party the winning edge.
He said most people from the middle belt who are resident in Rivers state have not only registered to vote in the forthcoming elections, they have by this development resolved to stay behind and vote in Rivers state, unlike what has been obtainable in previous elections.
Dr Alli added that he is confident that the APC governorship primaries in Rivers state would come and go without crisis because the other aspirants would finally accept the candidacy of Tonye Cole.
“the other aspirants are intelligent people and I believe that every intelligent person would bow to superior argument and Tonye Cole is that superior argument for the moment”, he said.
