As the rains begin to return, the lawmaker representing the people Port Harcourt City Constituency 1 in the Rivers state House of Assembly, Hon Victoria Nyeche has called on the government and residents of the state capital to take necessary steps to avert the perennial flooding that has consistently ravaged many parts of the city in recent times so that lives and properties are not put in harm’s way this year.

Speaking to newsmen at her residence in Port Harcourt, the lawmaker enjoined members of her constituency, especially those living in flood-prone areas to keep their drains clean and clear of debris to ensure a free flow of water.

“We have observed that a lot of people have very poor waste management habits and that will certainly not help us”.

“We should not expect that the government will clean our homes for us we should all endeavour to keep our surroundings clean”.

She also called the government to raise the bar on the promptness and effectiveness of waste evacuation and management around the city as waste that is not properly disposed contributes to the blockage of canals and drainages.

“As we enter into another rainy season, it is my prayer that we switch into the “be prepared mode” like the boys”, she advised.

“It would be very unfortunate if we have the same incidence of flooding as we have had in recent years because at the end of the day our lives are endangered and properties worth millions of Naira are destroyed”.

Hon Nyeche called on the Rivers state government not wait till another tragedy strikes but to immediately mobilize men and equipment to begin desilting drains and canals and to open up new water channels in places that have suffered recurrent flooding so as to save residents of the city from the agony that has now become an annual pain.

Victoria Nyeche who is a strong hopeful in the 2019 race to represent the people of Port Harcourt Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives also called on her supporters and members of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers state to remain calm, prayerful and focused as she is hopeful that all legal encumbrances would be removed to enable the party to participate, win and provide good governance for the people of the state.
